02 THE TEMPEST

(2022)

Duration (00:06:50)"The Tempest" is an experimental short film that explores disaster and the unknown from a child's perspective. Spanning seven minutes and primarily shot with a mini DV camcorder, it emphasizes the sense of temporality in its visual presentation.

The film attempts to reconstruct and understand the worldview of childhood from an adult's perspective, revisiting and reinterpreting childhood observations and experiences. It explores the fear of the "unknown" through the lens of a child's 'ignorance,' particularly in the context of the traditional Japanese "Shishiodori" ritual. Inspired by a prolonged observation of a lightning storm, the film artistically interprets Kant's concept of the sublime, placing the viewer amidst the awe-inspiring and terrifying forces of nature.

Through the eyes of a child, "The Tempest" captures not only the grand spectacle of a storm but also reflects the vulnerability and innocence of childhood in the face of nature's overwhelming power.
